Festival of Archaeology 2025

Saturday 19 July

This summer's Festival of Archaeology at the Ashmolean explores being Really Roman, and celebrates the opening of the museum's redisplayed Rome Galleries. The Festival is a free event for all the family and you're invited to take part in exciting activities and tours across the Museum. Drop in to enjoy a huge variety arts and crafts, demonstrations and storytelling celebrating the Roman theme. You'll be able to make your own Roman mosaics, meet Roman traders and explore objects in the Museum and examine them close up. You can even learn about Roman hairstyles.

Scholars' Library: Mary Anne Franks on 'Fearless Speech'

The Scholars’ Library is a monthly book talk series. In the July event, Dr Mary Anne Franks, the Eugene L. and Barbara A. Bernard Professor in Intellectual Property, Technology and Civil Rights Law at George Washington Law School, will discuss her book Fearless Speech: Breaking Free from the First Amendment. Her areas of expertise includes First Amendment law, Second Amendment law, law and technology, criminal law and family law. She is also the President and Legislative and Tech Policy Director of the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative, the leading US-based non-profit organization focused on image-based sexual abuse.

Black holes, neutron stars and gravitational waves: from a whisper to a symphony

Scientists first detected gravitational waves – ripples in spacetime predicted by Einstein – on 14 September 2015. That discovery, a gravitational-wave whisper from two colliding black holes, opened an entirely new window onto the Universe. Marking the tenth anniversary of this breakthrough, Professor Patrick Brady will recount how gravitational-wave astronomy has transformed from a bold experiment into a thriving field. Along the way, you'll learn how gravitational waves are generated, what happens at the black hole event horizon, and how neutron star collisions are responsible for most of the gold in our Universe.
